As the clock struck midnight on New Year's Eve, our family raised glasses of champagne (or sparkling cider) and sang a round of Auld Lange Syne. It was a long, tiring week, and no one felt very good that night. It was a discipline in that moment to celebrate, to turn our eyes away from life's difficulties and toward hope for a new turn around the sun.
Some holiday seasons are especially difficult, and we don't always understand why. It helps to look back over the last year and give thanks for the good.
Yesterday, we packed up our Christmas decor. The process was therapuetic, helping us prepare for a new year and new season on our homestead. I said it last year, and I'll say it again. Winter is different. It is bigger than we are, and we must submit to it. Freezing temperatures and winter weather are forecast for this weekend, and we are ready -- much more than we were last year. We've come a long way since January of last year, and I'm excited to see where God will take us in 2025.
