In the Garden: Breaking Ground
So, with gardening season just around the corner, we find ourselves preparing our plot once again. It’s slow going since we only have a portion of each day we can devote to the task. That being said, Tilde and Dagger are certainly helpful in digging out the large rocks.
Speaking of rocks, we’ve been putting all those little -- and big -- nuisances to good use down in our wet-weather creek bed. We're hoping this cuts down on possible erosion from flash floods.
When we aren't busy in the garden or working on landscaping, we've been researching planting and pest control methods for our little spouts.
One idea I'm particularly excited about is companion planting. For instance, marigolds, basil and chives repel insects; nasturtiums, snapdragons, and white clover attract pollinators; black-eyed peas and bee balm add nitrogen to the soil; carrots loosen the soil and spinach helps soil retain moisture. We can't wait to explore this idea and figure out what works for us. We certainly don't mind having another excuse to plant more basil!
